Imagine the magic of Christmas,
fairy tales, delicious candies and enormous mice
in a child's fantasy dream world.
This is the Nutcracker,
one of the world's most loved ballets with its beautiful music
written by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky,
probably the finest ballet composer ever.
It opens with a Christmas party at the mayor's house,
with his child Clara the central figure of the tale.
She is given a nutcracker that her brother promptly breaks.
After bed, she returns to the family room
and cradles the broken pieces of the nutcracker
as she falls asleep.
She falls asleep at the foot of the family's enormous Christmas tree
and dreams that she saves a prince from the evil Mouse King.
In his gratitude, the prince invites her to his castle
for a banquet in her honor.
